Sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology , New Delhi

OBJECTIVES

  • Carry out analysis of samples received from academic and research institutions, industries and organizations in the region. Provide instrumental facilities for scientists in the region to carry out measurements for research.
  • Acquire and develop capability of repair and preventive maintenance of sophisticated instruments. Train technicians for operation and maintenance of sophisticated instruments.
  • Organize short-term courses/workshops on the use and application of various spectroscopic and analytical techniques for students, teachers and personnel from industries.
  • Participate in projects aimed at developing prototypes of sophisticated instruments or at augmenting the capabilities of existing instruments.

Foreword from The Head SAIF

Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF), formerly Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre (RSIC) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Chennai is the first among the RSIC's established by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.  It has been specializing in spectroscopy and structure determination for the past two decades.  The centre is equipped with sophisticated instruments to carry out spectral measurements, structure determination and chemical analysis on par with advanced countries.

SAIF, IIT, Madras is administered by a group of well recognized faculty with full expertise spread over a large region of spectroscopy and structure determination with technical backup by well-trained staff both for operation and maintenance. Many of the technical staff were trained abroad at the factories of the respective instruments both in operation and maintenance. The faculty actively carries out research and takes up industrial consultancy projects when feasible. The electronic engineers are capable of designing and developing equipment and accessories necessary, apart from servicing the equipment.

Periodically SAIF conducts workshops, seminars and conferences to educate and demonstrate the functioning of the instruments on the spot to the scientists.

SAIF has been serving the research community of the region in a substantial way. Our services have not been exposed very well to industry.  In the changing global scenario and the role India is going to play in it, we feel that more industries will require our services. In addition to routine testing and characterization, we are also interested in offering consultancy.  We hope that a number of new organizations would explore to use our facilities.
