VG MkII ESCA SPECTROMETER

ESCA is a sophisticated unique surface analytical tool. Any solid material can be analyzed by VG ESCALAB MkII for the presence of unknown elements, surface composition, oxidation states of various elements, in situ depth profile analysis to evaluate the concentration gradient as a function of depth, etc.

    Description

1In the ESCA technique, a photon beam of X-ray or UV is bombarded with a solid substance and the kinetic energy of the ejected electrons is monitored. The kinetic energy of the ejected electron is equal to the energy of the incident photon less the binding energy (BE). The ESCALAB MK II instrument at RSIC, installed in 1984 combines all facilities for carrying out X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy. The data acquisition is done through an IBM compatible PC. In essence, this technique is capable of analysis at molecular level with a variety if in situ treatments. The versatile and judicious combination increases considerably the confidence limit of the analysis. The on-line computer facility considerably reduces the data acquisition times and analysis.

    Sample required

About 1mg. The sample required can be in the solid or liquid state. Sample should be pure and free from solvents and metal ions.

Sampling technique :

Pellet, Crystal, Powder etc., A minimum of 100 mg is sample is needed. If it is a solid sample, sizes can be as large as 1 sq. cm. in area and a few mm in depth.

Vacuum Compatibility :

The analysis is done in ultra high vacuum and therefore the sample has to be vacuum compatible.

Applications

Structural elucidation of organic compounds
Mechanistic study of fragmentation process under mass spectrometric condition
Molecular weight and structural analysis of large biomolecules.
